MARTIN CO. – Martin County has been selected to receive funding from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) for a significant new development to provide much-needed affordable housing and childcare services. The state has allocated $600,000 from Governor Eric Holcomb’s READI 2.0 program to support the creation of 50 new housing units in Loogootee, benefiting low-income families in the region.
The funds will be used to develop Oak Street Village, a project that will include a mix of one-, two-– and three-bedroom units designed to serve families earning 30%, 50%, and 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI). In addition to the housing units, the development will feature essential amenities, including a clubhouse, playground, and, crucially, childcare facilities to support local families.
The project, which will be completed by 2026, is expected to significantly impact Martin County by addressing the ongoing shortage of affordable housing and childcare options. This investment in Loogootee is part of the state’s broader effort to revitalize communities and support families’ economic stability.
In addition to the $600,000 READI 2.0 allocation, the development will receive $1.3 million in IHCDA credits, which will further support the construction of the units and amenities.
Governor Holcomb’s READI 2.0 program, established in 2021, is designed to foster regional development and improve the quality of life for Indiana residents. The program focuses on key areas, such as housing, workforce development, and childcare, to boost the state’s overall economic competitiveness.
Oak Street Village will provide affordable living spaces for families in need and make a long-term impact by offering childcare resources, ensuring parents can access quality care while they work or attend school.
This investment marks a major step forward in improving housing and supporting families in Loogootee and surrounding areas. Construction will begin in the coming months, and local leaders and community members are excited about the positive change the project will bring to the region.
