Bertha’s Mission spread love and good faith at their Annual Free Thanksgiving Dinner November 23

LAWRENCE COUNTY- Bertha’s Mission hosted its annual free Thanksgiving dinner on November 23, bringing the community together to share a warm meal and gratitude. Known for its commitment to serving those in need, the event provided turkey, sides, and desserts to families and individuals. Volunteers worked tirelessly to create a welcoming atmosphere, embodying the spirit of giving. The dinner highlighted the mission’s dedication to fostering unity and ensuring no one goes without a holiday celebration.

The event featured an impressive spread, with 64 turkeys and 52 hams prepared to ensure no one went without a holiday meal. Held at First Baptist Church in Bedford and Jacob Finger United Methodist Church in Mitchell, the dinner provided a welcoming space for neighbors to share in the spirit of gratitude. Beyond the event, volunteers delivered 222 meals across Lawrence County, extending their kindness to those unable to attend.

“It’s just so great to see people enjoying their meal,” said Janice Nickeo-Pendergrass, owner of Bertha’s Mission. This is the 13th year for the dinners, which are made possible solely through donations and sponsors. Dozens of people come in, some from hundreds of miles away, and all of the work is volunteered. We couldn’t do this without every one of them,” she said.

The menu featured all the goodies that will put you to bed shortly after eating. Turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, carrots, mac and cheese, and salad were some of the foods on offer, and it was all delicious. Pastor James Radford from Victory Community Church in Bedford graciously donated the time to prepare the 64 turkeys that were served.

Thanksgiving isn’t complete without something sweet!

Thank you, Bertha’s Mission, for your incredible generosity and dedication in hosting the free Thanksgiving dinner. Your kindness and hard work bring joy and unity to our community each year.
