ELLETTSVILLE – Edgewood swept past Bedford North Lawrence in the season opener during high school swimming action on Tuesday night.
The Mustangs pulled out a tight 87-86 victory in the boys meet, while the Edgewood girls rolled to a 105-75 triumph.
In the boys meet, BNL’s Oliver Brown and Garrett Gabhart both won two events. Brown touched first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.36) and 50 free (24.99), while Gabhart claimed the 200 individual medley (2:10.51) and 100 backstroke (56.40).
“It’s always tough to lose by a point,” BNL coach Adam Young said. “It doesn’t happen much in our sport. We were down a couple of guys, and with no diving we will be in the hole every meet. Oliver and Garrett are in good form for this early in the season. There are a lot of things to be encouraged about.”
In the girls meet, BNL’s Cookie King won the 200 free (2:17.58), Sabrina Lipp took the 50 free (28.05) in her first high school race, Amelia Rich won the 500 free (6:43.70), and Ava Lipp was first in the 100 backstroke (1:04.77).
“The girls are much improved from last year,” Young said. “Edgewood had some really good swimmers and a lot of upperclassmen. We are a young team, but the times were phenomenal, a lot of lifetime bests, which is rare for a first meet.”
BNL will visit Floyd Central on Saturday..
