BEDFORD – Bedford Police arrested a man after he allegedly held a knife to his estranged wife’s throat during a domestic fight on November 23.
Dennis Voorhies, 78, Bedford, is facing charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon, domestic battery, and resisting law enforcement.
Police responded to a domestic dispute at 2008 G Street at 7:17 p.m., according to a probable cause affidavit. The female caller reported that she and 42-year-old Michael Voorhies, her estranged husband, had been arguing when the situation escalated dangerously.
The woman told officers that during the argument, Voorhies retrieved a pocket knife and brushed it against her hair. When she called him a derogatory name, he allegedly grabbed her by the hair, yanked her head back, and pressed the knife against her neck.
Police located Voorhies inside the residence, where he became verbally aggressive. He admitted that during the confrontation, he threw the knife at his estranged wife after she allegedly threw a phone at him. Voorhies also admitted to threatening her, reportedly stating, “If you don’t quit calling me a son of a bitch, I’m going to cut your throat.” He further confessed to pulling her by the hair and making threats to kill her.
The woman provided a signed affidavit for battery, prompting officers to place Voorhies under arrest. However, he resisted, leading officers to subdue him to the ground to secure handcuffs.
Voorhies was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital for a medical evaluation, where he continued to threaten the victim. Once medically cleared, he was booked into the Lawrence County Jail, facing charges of domestic battery, intimidation, and resisting law enforcement.
The investigation remains ongoing.
