MITCHELL — Kristaphor Derrek Canfield, 41, of Mitchell, was arrested on Friday, November 22, on several criminal charges following a warrant service by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department. According to the probable cause affidavit, officers, including Lawrence County Sheriff Greg Day, arrived at Canfield’s residence at 50 Daisy Lane to serve an active warrant issued by Lawrence County Superior Court II. Upon approaching the property, officers observed Canfield standing outside his vehicle. As they approached, Canfield attempted to flee into his home, prompting officers to chase him.

After a brief pursuit, Canfield entered the trailer and shut the door. Officers attempted to make contact through the door, warning that they would force entry if he did not comply. Canfield then opened the door, was taken into custody without resistance, and placed in hand restraints.

During the arrest, officers detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from Canfield. When questioned, he admitted to recently smoking marijuana.

A search of the trailer revealed illegal substances in plain view, including two glass smoking devices, rolling papers, and a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana. Two hand-rolled marijuana cigarettes, weighing a total of 3 grams, were also confiscated.

Canfield, who also has a valid prescription for suboxone, was further found to be attempting to smuggle multiple suboxone strips into the Lawrence County Jail during the booking process. The suboxone, 2.3 grams, was discovered hidden in Canfield’s underwear.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
