SANTA CLAUS— A cherished holiday tradition is back in full swing in Santa Claus, Indiana, as the iconic Santa Claus Post Office offers its special holiday postmark again this season.
The Santa Claus Post Office is the only one in the world with the Santa Claus name, and during December, it becomes a bustling hub for holiday mail. Employees report that the post office handles more than 400,000 pieces of mail in December alone, dramatically increasing from the usual 13,000 pieces received monthly during the rest of the year.
Since 1983, the Santa Claus Post Office has offered a unique Santa-themed postmark for Christmas cards and other mail. Each year, local high school students create a design for the postmark. Aubrey Harpe, a recent high school graduate and current freshman at the University of Southern Indiana, created this year’s design.
“Each year, patrons from all over the world request the celebrated Santa Claus holiday postmark,” said Postmaster Joshua Graham in a press release. “Many drive into town to personally hand-cancel their holiday mailings with the renowned picture postmark, while others request the special postmark by mail. The endearing Santa Claus postmark is a long-standing tradition for our town, and it contributes to the charm of the spirit each season.”
The 2024 Santa Claus holiday postmark is available at the Santa Claus Post Office through December 24. Whether in person or by mail, people from across the globe continue to take part in this heartwarming tradition that adds an extra touch of magic to the holiday season in Santa Claus, Indiana.
