BNL wrestlers go 0-5 in South Invitational

BLOOMINGTON – Bedford North Lawrence went 0-5 in the Bloomington South Invitational during boys high school wrestling action on Saturday.

The Stars dropped decisions to Bloomington South (68-12), Center Grove (71-12), Pike (65-12), Tell City (65-12) and Martinsville (58-15).

“This is an extremely tough invitational,” BNL coach Mike Branam said. “We knew we were going to see some good wrestlers.”

BNL’s Wyatt Philpott, Ethan Stancombe and Dorian Couchman all recorded three wins during the tournament.

Philpott posted a pin on Center Grove’s Daniel LaRocca (1:00), a pin over Pike’s Jeremiah Willis (2:40) and pin of Martinsville’s DeClan Smith (58 seconds) at 120 pounds. Stancombe stopped Center Grove’s Eric Camargo (pin at 2:35), Tell City’s Brandon Casebolt (pin in 1:43) and Martinsville’s Morgan Harris (20-3 technical fall) at 157.

Couchman decked Pike’s Andre Brown (pin in 55 seconds), Tell City’s Kason Naviaux (pin in 1:15) and Martinsville’s Colton Randle (12-1 decision) at 138.

“Ethan, Wyatt, and Dorian all had very good days on the whole, winning against some formidable opponents,” Branam said. “In fact, the entire team showed improvement every round. They fought with grit and determination from the first whistle to the last, and everyone learned something each round. I couldn’t have asked for any more from them. To me, that means they all had a good day.”

The Stars will visit Bloomington North on Thursday.
