BEDFORD — Jack Louis Voigtschild, 79, of Bedford, a beloved figure in Lawrence County, known for his unwavering commitment to serving others, especially in times of crisis, passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving wife, Sherry, with whom he celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary earlier this year.
Jack was a dedicated volunteer and responder to those in need for many years, earning the nickname “Assist One” from local emergency services organizations. Jack’s readiness to lend a hand and provide support was unmatched, and he was often found at the scene of accidents or emergencies, providing comfort and assistance without hesitation. His faithful support system was his wife, Sherry, who was by his side every step of the way.
Phil Thorne, who also served as a chaplain, spoke highly of Jack’s selflessness. “Jack gave countless hours, day and night, to the people of Lawrence and surrounding counties, with no compensation for his efforts. This sacrifice was not only made by him but by his family, especially his wife,” Thorne said. “He gave more time and energy than anyone I have ever known.”
Jack was deeply involved in many local organizations and made a lasting impact. He was a long-time member of the Bedford Free Methodist Church, where he was known for his leadership and dedication. He was also active in several community and service groups, including the Noon Lions Club, Gideons International, Lawrence County Vietnam Veterans Group, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Celebrate Recovery, The Landing, Solutions Center, Gillen Post 33 of the American Legion, the Crisis Intervention Team, the Bedford Revitalization Board, Shawswick Township Volunteer Fire Department, Lawrence County Women’s Ministries, and the Salvation Army.
Jack was a man of great faith and served as chaplain for many organizations, including the Lawrence County Police Department, IU Health Bedford Hospital, Gillen Post 33 of the American Legion, and the Vietnam Veterans Group. He retired as Chaplain for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Salvation Army Emergency Services.
Jack was also a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1970 and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in service to his country.
Born and raised in Bedford, Jack graduated from Bedford High School in 1963. He then attended the Indiana School of Mortuary Sciences and Indiana University. He worked as a funeral director at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home before retiring as an insurance agent for several companies.
Jack’s passing marks the loss of a truly compassionate and selfless individual who dedicated his life to serving others. All who knew him will remember his community contributions and tireless efforts to help those in need. He is survived by his wife, Sherry, and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the many organizations he served throughout his life.
Funeral services for Jack will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 13, at the Free Methodist Church, 701 R Street, Bedford, with Pastor Adam Strauser and Pastor Scott Salm officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Bedford, with Military Rites accorded by the Honor Guard of Gillen Post 33 of the American Legion. Visitation will also be held at the Free Methodist Church on Thursday, December 12th, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Instead of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Jack be made to the Life Food Pantry or Hope Resource Center, both in Bedford.

George Family Funeral Homes.
