Indiana University makes historic college football playoff appearance, preps for showdown with Notre Dame

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana University football fans have much to celebrate after a historic 11-1 season, with the Hoosiers securing their first-ever spot in the College Football Playoff. Following a dominant 66-0 victory over rival Purdue, IU fans are excitedly buzzing as they prepare for an intense battle with Notre Dame in the first round of the playoffs. The game will occur in South Bend on Friday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m.

Kurtis Rourke, the Hoosiers’ standout quarterback, was a major force in Indiana’s historic regular-season finale. Rourke threw two of his six touchdown passes to Elijah Sarratt, while Justice Ellison and Ty Son Lawton each added rushing touchdowns to cap off a blowout win. The Hoosiers (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten, No. 10 CFP) reclaimed the coveted Old Oaken Bucket from Purdue and earned their place in college football history.

The 66-0 victory marked Indiana’s largest-ever win in the 125-game series with Purdue, surpassing the previous record of 52-7 from 1988. It also stands as Indiana’s largest home win in the series, eclipsing their 37-0 triumph in 1917. The Hoosiers’ commanding performance also secured the most significant conference win in school history.

Despite the impressive regular season, the Hoosiers’ dream of competing for the Big Ten title was dashed when No. 4 Penn State defeated Maryland 44-7, eliminating Indiana from championship contention. However, IU’s incredible 11-1 record, combined with their strong performance throughout the season, has earned them a spot in the College Football Playoff—a historic first for the program.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming showdown between Indiana and Notre Dame. The winner will advance to face Georgia in the prestigious Sugar Bowl. The matchup’s excitement is palpable as two of Indiana’s most significant football programs prepare to square off.
