JASONVILLE—Jasonville, Hymera, and Coalmont residents face a water outage following a Sunday night fire at the town’s water plant.
The fire, which broke out around 10 p.m. on Sunday, December 8, has left residents without running water. Officials have confirmed that the water plants have been destroyed.
In response to the emergency, Jasonville Utilities has issued an update advising residents of limited bottled water distribution available at their water office. The statement reads, “Attention Jasonville customers! LIMITED bottled water is available. Distribution will take place directly behind the Jasonville water office. Please enter from 48 and exit onto Cook Street.”
Non-drinkable water is also available. Please bring a container for this water to use for flushing toilets. DO NOT DRINK!
Water customers are urged to take advantage of this limited supply of bottled water while officials work to restore service.
Mayor Eric Siepman confirmed that the fire had caused extensive damage, resulting in the building’s total loss. There is no estimated timeline for when the water supply will be restored.
Hymera Water also notified residents that they should prepare for up to a week without water. The statement reads: “We will need to prepare to be without water for a week. They plan to get us back online, but it will take days.” The water provider is working on securing bulk water and additional bottled water for residents. Once logistics are established, bottled water and hand sanitizers will be available at the water office.
In the wake of the outage, Shakamak Schools in Jasonville operated on an e-learning day on Monday, December 9.
Local officials continue to assess the situation, with crews working to restore water service as quickly as possible. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
