BNL swimmers sweep past Artesians

BNL’s Cookie King won her individual event and competed on three winning relays during Tuesday’s sweep of Martinsville.

MARTINSVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence swept to wins over Martinsville during high school swimming action on Tuesday night.

The Stars posted an impressive 121-45 victory in the girls meet, then won the final event to pull out an 82-80 triumph in the boys meet.

In the boys meet, the Stars recorded four wins. Dustin Haltom, Logan Langley, Carson Puckett and Porter Brown combined to claim the 200-yard medley relay in 1:58.28, Cameron Irwin took the 50 freestyle in 29.09, and Garrett Gabhart won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.60. Puckett, Irwin, Brown and Gabhart teamed to take the deciding 400 free relay in 4:02.58.

“We swam a lot of off events,” BNL coach Adam Young said. “We are still getting times as we look to solidify the lineups going forward. I wanted to see how some of our guys competed when they were counted on to win events and score.

“Martinsville has a good team this year and so I knew it would be close. It came down to the last relay, and the guys brought it home.”

In the girls meet, BNL won eight events. Ava Lipp, Emma Heinzman, Cookie King and Sabrina Lipp clocked 2:05.87 in the 200 medley relay. Sabrina Lipp, Mia Manke, Ava Lipp and King took the 200 free relay in 1:57.55, while Manke, Heinzman, King and Ava Lipp carded 4:18.95 in the 400 free relay.

Individual winners included Heinzman (2:24.88 in the 200 free and 28.09 in the 50 free), Sabrina Lipp (2:47.08 in the 200 individual medley), Jabrie Sullivan (1:10.66 in the 100 free) and King (6:10.22 in the 500 free).

“The girls continue to get better and better,” Young said. “I am excited to see how we line up against an always tough New Albany team.”

BNL will host New Albany on Saturday.
