JASPER CO.- On December 11th, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Troopers were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on I-65 northbound near the 228.5 mile-marker. This location is roughly a mile and a half south of the State Road 10 exit for Demotte.
Preliminary Investigation shows that a blue 2008 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling north on I-65 at the 228.5-mile marker when the vehicle lost control and ran off the roadway. The car rolled over and struck a tree approximately 50 feet from the roadway. Trooper Martin Benner arrived and found that the passenger of the vehicle was unconscious and not breathing. Trooper Benner immediately began performing CPR on the individual until EMS could arrive on the scene. Trooper Benner was assisted by the vehicle’s driver and three Good Samaritans who had stopped to help. One of the Good Samaritans, an off-duty paramedic, was identified as Theron Bogan of Rensselaer. Due to the icy roadway conditions, Trooper Benner, Mr. Bogan, and the other Good Samaritans performed CPR for approximately twenty minutes until EMS arrived safely on scene and took over treatment. EMS then revived the individual, and he was transported by ambulance to Franciscan Health Crown Point for further treatment.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the vehicle crash.
Also assisting on-scene were the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, Jasper County Fire and EMS, Cheever’s Towing, and the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division.
