BNL swimmers splash to sweep of New Albany

BNL’s Ava Lipp won two individual events as the Stars posted sweeps of New Albany on Saturday.

BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence swept to wins over New Albany during high school swimming action on Saturday.

The Stars dominated both meets, winning the boys by a 119-47 count and the girls by a 108-58 final.

“A great showing today by both teams,” BNL coach Adam Young said. “The girls team has now won two in a row. We haven’t done that in a number of years. This team just keeps getting better and I think things are really starting to gel.”

In the boys meet, the Stars posted nine wins, including a sweep of the relays. Oliver Brown won two individual races, taking the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.15) and the 100 free (55.93). Garrett Gabhart was also a double winner, touching first in the 50 free (22.56) and the 100 backstroke (54.75).

Carson Puckett won the 100 butterfly (1:05.40) and Logan Langley won the 100 breaststroke (1:14.33).

In the relays, Dustin Haltom, Langley, Gabhart and Porter Brown combined to claim the 200 medley relay (1:52.94). Langley, Puckett, Porter Brown and Oliver Brown won the 200 free relay (1:45.45), while Oliver Brown, Puckett, Haltom and Gabhart took the 400 free relay (3:49.88).

BNL’s Garrett Gabhart was a double winner, including a victory in the 100 backstroke.

“All the swimmers are starting to show some signs of fatigue,” Young said. “That is a good thing. They are putting the work in, and I think we are starting to see a glimpse of what the end of the season could hold.”

In the girls meet, the Stars also nine events. Ava Lipp was a double winner in the 200 individual medley (2:32.13) and 100 backstroke (1:06.38), while Cookie King posted two wins in the 200 free (2:19.16) and 100 butterfly (1:07.10). Other winners included Sabrina Lipp (27.72 in the 50 free) and Mia Manke (1:04.27 in the 100 free).

BNL also swept the relays, taking the 200 medley relay (Manke, Emma Heinzman, King and Sabrina Lipp in 2:08.10), 200 free (Sabrina Lipp, Jabrie Sullivan, Francesca Orozco and Ava Lipp in 1:56.57), and the 400 free (Manke, Heinzman, King and Ava Lipp in 4:18.07).

“We had a lot of PRs today and our newer swimmers are starting to pick up steam,” Young said. “However, Frannie Orozco had a day of days, putting up lifetime bests across the board.”

BNL will host Columbus North and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the program (with an alumni meet) on Dec. 21.

BNL’s Carson Puckett won a race and helped win two relays.
