BROWNSBURG – Bedford North Lawrence, which has blown out multiple opponents since the addition of the rule, got its first taste of the business of the mercy rule.
Brownsburg, ranked No.10 in Class 4A, exploded for 29 points in the second quarter, triggered the running clock for the entire second half, and cruised to a devastating 68-21 victory over the Stars on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (9-2) drilled 12 3-pointers, including eight in the first half, and 6-6 center Avery Gordon scored 11 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and blocked four shots in limited duty. Brownsburg handed BNL (4-6) one of the most lopsided defeats in its history.
“We had a couple different strategies to throw at them,” BNL coach Greg Burton said. “None of them worked. They have 6-6 inside and hit three-pointers. We had to pick our poison.
“I was disappointed with our effort and execution offensively.”
Elle McCullough paced the Bulldogs with 14 points, including 12 during the first-half breakout as Brownsburg rolled to a 47-10 lead at the half. Gabbi Harvey had 10 points off the bench.
The Stars struggled to find shots against Brownsburg’s overwhelming height advantage. BNL converted only 8 of 41 shots and added 14 turnovers. Miley Sherrill and Makaya Jackson had 6 points each.
BNL will return to action on Dec 21 when it hosts Fort Wayne Northrop.
