Former IU athletics physician refuses to answer questions in deposition amid sexual abuse lawsuit

BLOOMINGTON— A federal court filing reveals that Dr. Brad Bomba Sr., a former Indiana University athletics physician, refused to answer questions during a deposition earlier this month in connection with allegations of sexual abuse.

Dr. Bomba, who served as a contracted physician for IU athletics for several decades, was accused of sexual abuse in a lawsuit filed in September. His work with IU’s athletic teams ended in the late 1990s.

On September 11, three former IU basketball players filed a lawsuit against the Indiana University Board of Trustees, alleging they were victims of abuse during their time at the university. The lawsuit led to the deposition of Dr. Bomba, who was questioned about the claims in December.

A federal court filing dated December 12 revealed that Bomba invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination 45 times during the deposition. The Fifth Amendment protects individuals from being compelled to testify against themselves in legal proceedings.

The recent court filing has requested that the court compel Dr. Bomba to answer the questions posed to him during the deposition, which would move the case forward.

The legal process will unfold in the coming months as the case proceeds.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
