Man sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for 2023 murder of his girlfriend

COLUMBUS — Anthony Carter, 51, of Indianapolis, was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for the 2023 murder of his girlfriend Ashley Neville, Bartholomew County prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Judge Jim Worton handed down the sentence in Superior Court, following the jury’s recommendation after Carter’s October conviction in a six-day trial.

“This case is a gruesome reminder of the evil that some people are capable of,” said Bartholomew County Prosecutor Lindsey Holden-Kay.

The case began on April 16, 2023, when Bartholomew County deputies conducted a welfare check at a home on County Road 650 South. Carter’s daughter had contacted authorities after her father told her he had killed his girlfriend. Deputies discovered Neville’s body hidden under clothing and other items on a bed.

An autopsy revealed that Neville died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Carter was apprehended later that day in a wooded area near the crime scene. He confessed to both shooting and asphyxiating Neville and led investigators to where he had hidden the murder weapon in the woods.

“This case is a gruesome reminder of the evil that some people are capable of,” said Prosecutor Lindsey Holden-Kay. She expressed hope that the verdict would provide “a small amount of closure to the victim’s family.”

The life sentence without parole ensures Carter will spend the remainder of his life in prison for the murder.
