Bedford man faces drug charges after police chase through shopping center

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested Thursday afternoon following a foot pursuit that ended with a TASER deployment near Lincoln Avenue, according to Bedford Police Department officials.

David J. Carroll, 35, was taken into custody after allegedly fleeing from Major Clint Swanson during what began as a routine traffic stop in the IGA parking lot on N Street. Carroll faces charges of resisting arrest and possession of methamphetamine, in addition to an existing felony warrant.

According to police reports, Major Swanson recognized Carroll driving a black Jeep Patriot near the Lincoln Avenue roundabout at approximately 3:13 p.m. After confirming an active felony warrant, Swanson attempted to apprehend Carroll in the IGA parking lot. Carroll allegedly fled on foot, dropping a knife during the pursuit.

Major Swanson sustained minor injuries during the chase after falling from a concrete wall but continued the pursuit. The chase ended when Swanson successfully deployed his department-issued taser, causing Carroll to fall and strike his head and shoulder on the concrete.

A search incident to arrest revealed a clear plastic bag containing a crystal-like substance in Carroll’s cigarette package, which later tested positive for methamphetamine. A subsequent K-9 search of Carroll’s vehicle by Officer Bell and his partner Castiel led to the discovery of additional items containing drug residue.

Carroll was transported to IU Health Bedford for medical clearance following the TASER deployment before being booked into the Lawrence County Jail.

Police noted that Carroll has a history of resisting law enforcement and is known to carry multiple weapons, referencing a previous incident from July 2023.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
