LAWRENCE CO. – The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department has identified an opportunity to expand its K-9 unit capabilities while saving taxpayer dollars through an interlocal agreement with the Town of Oolitic.
Sheriff Greg Day presented commissioners with a proposal to purchase a 2022 Dodge Durango K-9 cruiser from Oolitic for $33,000. The vehicle, which has only 17,000 miles, represents a significant cost savings for the department.
“A canine unit would cost $65,000 if we purchased it new,” Sheriff Day told commissioners. “The one in Oolitic is in great shape, and they are willing to sell it at half the price of a new one.”
The town of Oolitic can part with the vehicle as they no longer maintain an active K-9 unit, making the specially-equipped Durango surplus to their needs.
The interlocal agreement between the two government entities will allow the Sheriff’s Department to acquire the vehicle at substantial savings to county taxpayers while maintaining the department’s K-9 unit capabilities.
