Obituary: Daniel C. ‘Smitty’ Schmidt

Daniel C Schmidt, ‘Smitty’, 79, passed away on December 16, 2024, at his home with his children at his bedside.

Daniel was born in Bedford to John D. Schmidt annd Bett J. (Gambrell) Schmidt. He was an all-natural ‘easy goer’ who loved history, nature, and cruising where the road took him. After his early years in the military and working as an auto bodyman. He went on to master many trades and later was known for his work as an independent equipment operator, which he did successfully for many years.

He loved a “good challenge” of fixing something when it broke, no matter how tedious the repair was. His biggest accomplishment, when asked, was watching his children grow up. His last years were spent enjoying the outdoors, eating good food, shooting firearms and fishing with his boy, gardening with his daughter, and helping her with whatever projects she had going on, whether by verbal support or just taking over doing it himself.

He is survived by his two children, daughter Emily, and son, his little boy, no matter how big,’ Jeremy, both of Bedford; a sister, Nancy (Greg) Ashley, Brother David (Kathy) Schmidt of FL; and a brother, Winston (Liz) Schmidt, OH.

He was preceded in death by both mom and dad, little brother Joe Blaine, and so many friends, including lifelong buddy Fred Baker, who he can’t wait to see.

Daniel wanted to be remembered as he was, so cremation was chosen, with no service.

His daughter asks to consider donating to the American Pulmonary Association in Smitty’s memory. This nonprofit focuses on treating people with hypertension when they cannot obtain help in traditional ways.

Cresthaven Funeral Home is entrusted with his care. Condolences may be made at www.cresthavenfh.com.
