JASPER — A deadly shooting at a hotel in Jasper has left one person dead and another behind bars.
Jasper police responded to a 911 call around 2:10 p.m. ET Thursday, December 19, reporting a shooting at the SureStay Hotel off Wernsing Road. Authorities say the incident began with a verbal dispute between Jakahri Keyshaun and Lawrence Jonte Walker.
According to the Jasper Police Department, the disagreement quickly escalated when Keyshaun pulled out a firearm. The victim and suspect were reportedly part of a larger group traveling together at the time of the incident.
Witnesses at the scene said Walker was shot at least five times across his body in the hotel’s parking lot. He was rushed to Deaconess Memorial Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Keyshaun was taken into custody and booked by the Jasper Police Department on charges of murder. He is currently being held with a bond.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the individual’s relationship or the events leading up to the shooting.
Police are urging anyone with additional information to come forward as they continue to investigate this tragic incident.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
