Tragic Altercation Claims Life
A fishing trip turned fatal in late April near the Lawrence/Orange County line. Timothy Tolbert of Mitchell lost his life following an altercation with Homer Smith, 46, also of Mitchell.
The incident occurred on Winegar Road when Smith allegedly approached Tolbert and a female companion, leading to a physical confrontation.
Smith was later arrested at his mother’s residence by Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies and charged with Tolbert’s murder. The case sent shockwaves through the local community and highlighted the devastating consequences of violence.
Smith is scheduled to stand trial on a charge of murder on January 21, 2025, in Orange County Circuit Court.

In a celebration of civic dedication, the Hoosier Trails Council Boy Scouts of America and the City of Bedford paid tribute to Mark Scherschel for his lifelong commitment to scouting and public service. Scherschel’s 25-year tenure as a Scoutmaster and City Council Member left an indelible mark on Bedford’s youth and the broader community.
Born in 1949, Scherschel’s journey from Eagle Scout to community pillar exemplifies the impact of sustained civic engagement. His diverse career spanning accounting, mental health services, education, and extensive volunteer work showcases a life dedicated to public service. Scherschel’s eight successive terms on the Bedford City Council and involvement in numerous local organizations underscore his commitment to community development.
Justice Served in Tragic Child Neglect Case
A somber chapter in local judicial history unfolded as Superior Court I Judge John Plummer II sentenced Cheyenne Hill, 33, to 30 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections. Hill was found guilty of child neglect causing death, a Level 1 felony, in connection with the tragic passing of her 20-month-old daughter, Elliaunna Plummer.
The case began in November 2022, culminating in a trial that profoundly affected the community. The young victim’s injuries and subsequent death highlighted the critical importance of child protection and the devastating consequences of neglect.
Judge Plummer’s poignant remarks at sentencing echoed the community’s grief and the pursuit of justice for the young victim.
