BUTLER – On Thursday, December 26, at approximately 2:35 p.m., Butler Police responded to the 100 block of West Willow Street about a person being shot.
Upon arrival, they located Gary D. Chaffins, 37, of Butler, with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. Police learned that the suspect was still inside the residence.
Officers from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, Waterloo Town Marshalls, Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, The Indiana State Police, Auburn Police Department’s ERT team, and the DeKalb County Prosecutors Office responded to the scene.
Contact was made with the suspect, Danny James Montoya, 40, of Butler. After a short time, Montoya was taken into custody without incident. Montoya was charged with criminal recklessness with a firearm, a Level 6 Felony, and incarcerated in the DeKalb County Jail.
Gary D. Chaffins is listed in stable condition.
Charges are allegations of a crime, and suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
