MARION – The Indiana State Police, at the request of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, are investigating a police-involved shooting in which a Marion, IN, man and a Grant County deputy sustained injury.
Preliminary investigations by Indiana State Police detectives revealed that today, at approximately 6:47 p.m., deputies from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the 3000 block of E. County Road 450 N. following a report of an individual threatening to harm another person.
Upon arrival, deputies instructed the individuals inside the residence to come outside. Moments later, a man identified as Glenn A. Smock, 52, of Marion, exited the residence armed with a shotgun. Smock discharged his shotgun, striking one of the deputies. In response, the deputies discharged their duty weapon(s) at least once, striking Smock. He retreated inside the residence and barricaded himself. Shortly afterward, he exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.
Smock received medical treatment at the scene and was later transported by medical helicopter to an area hospital for further treatment.Â
The deputy was transported to a local hospital and treated and released.
The deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for the Grant County Sheriff’s Office following an officer-involved shooting.
The Indiana State Police is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office.
This investigation is ongoing, and no further information will be released. Once completed, the findings will be submitted to the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
