Struggling Stars finish eighth in Donna Cheatham Classic

BNL’s Tori Nikirk lines up a jumper. The Stars went 0-3 in the Donna Cheatham Classic at Scottsburg.

SCOTTSBURG – Bedford North Lawrence continued its struggles, falling to Class A No.2 Borden in the seventh-place game of the Donna Cheatham Classic on Saturday.

The Stars (4-10) suffered a 59-37 setback while finishing eighth in the eight-team field, going 0-3 in the two-day tournament.

The Braves (12-4) took control in the second quarter, pulling away to a 35-23 lead. Ava Wheeler had 20 points and McKenna Mullen added 10 for Borden.

“We just ran out of gas,” BNL coach Greg Burton said. “Not your typical seventh-place game. We knew we would play them again this season (on Feb .1) so we played mostly zone in the first half and played a lot of girls throughout.

“Wheeler was really good. We had no answer for her. It was neck and neck, and they got loose for three treys in about a 90-second span late in the second quarter to go up 12. And we were in catch-up mode the rest of the way.”

Miley Sherrill paced BNL with 13 points and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. The Stars, who have lost five straight, continued their shooting woes, hitting only 12 of 45 shots, and totaled 18 turnovers.

“I thought Miley played pretty well,” Burton said. “She was attacking and consistent for us. I was proud of her.”

Batesville 43, BNL 35 – In the first consolation game, the Bulldogs rallied from a 20-10 deficit in the first half to hand the Stars their fourth straight loss.

Marlee Obermeyer paced Batesville with 16 points while Sophie Gesell added 9.

Sherrill scored 9 points for BNL, which totaled only five points in the fourth quarter as Batesville broke away from a 30-30 deadlock. Jordynn Blann added 7 points for the Stars.

“The Batesville game was similar to the Columbus North game in many ways,” Burton said. “Too many costly, unforced turnovers. There were also some questionable calls/no-calls. I think it affected our mindset and we stopped attacking the basket because of it.”

Seymour 59, Borden 51 – The Owls advanced to the fifth-place game as Abby Otte scored 17 points and Emmy Munson added 15. Wheeler had 15 points for the Braves.

Scottsburg 54, Eastern Pekin 44 – In the third-place game, Ellie Richardson scored 25 points to lead the Warriorettes (5-10). Addison Smith had 10 points for the Musketeers (8-6).

Seymour 59, Batesville 40 – In the fifth-place game, Munson had 16 points and Kenzie Gagner added 12 for the Owls.

Franklin Central 62, Columbus North 45 – The Flashes won the championship as Lily Graves scored 24 points and Payton DuVall added 17. Kaylie Harmon had 18 points for the Bull Dogs.

BNL will return to action on Jan. 2 at Evansville Central.
