BEDFORD – As June 2024 drew to a close, Lawrence County saw significant developments in infrastructure, community leadership, and local celebrations. Here’s a recap of the month’s key events:
Emergency Road Repairs on 16th Street
A major infrastructure challenge emerged when a water main break on 16th Street caused undetermined damage to the road. In response, city officials swiftly engaged with INDOT to develop a joint approach to address the damage.
On June 18th, the City of Bedford and the Redevelopment Commission took decisive action by passing an emergency resolution. This declaration authorized a public works project to repair 16th Street and install a new water main. The Redevelopment Commission allocated funds for this crucial project.
The comprehensive plan involved:
- INDOT assessing the road condition
- Utilizing a contractor already under contract for roadway assessment, reconstruction, and ADA sidewalks
- Retiring the current 12-inch and 4-inch water lines
- Installing a new 12-inch main line with lateral services
This swift response demonstrated the city’s commitment to maintaining critical infrastructure and ensuring minimal disruption to residents.
Lawrence County Fair Queen Crowned
June also brought moments of celebration and community spirit. The Lawrence County Fair saw the crowning of its 2024 Queen, Emily Phillips.
The royal court for this year includes:
- 1st Runner Up and People’s Choice: Clover Todd
- 2nd Runner Up: Hadley Teague
- Miss Congeniality: Campbell Teague
- Princess: Kadance Hyneman
- Jr. Miss: Rhylee Blackwell
- Little Miss: Charlotte Stafford

New Leadership for Oolitic Police Department
In a significant development for local law enforcement, Ryan Duckett was appointed as the new Oolitic Town Marshal on June 12th. Duckett brings a wealth of experience to the role, including:
- Veteran status in both the Army (12 years in infantry) and Air Force
- Previous service as a reserve deputy with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department
- Experience as Assistant Chief in Mitchell
Duckett’s appointment promises to bring fresh leadership and modernization to the Oolitic Police Department. He expressed enthusiasm about moving the department forward, emphasizing the goal of increased police presence to enhance community safety.
