May 2024: A Month in Review

BEDFORD As May 2024 came to a close, Lawrence County experienced a series of significant events that left a lasting impact on the community.

Tragic Shooting Leads to Murder Charge

On May 18th, a shocking incident occurred in Bedford when Johnnie Grubb IV, 44, was fatally shot at his home on Sunny Acres Lane. Another man, Jeffery Crane, 49, was seriously injured in the same incident. The alleged shooter, Timothy Brian Helton of Bloomington, was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder, among other charges.

The incident, captured on surveillance video, reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a four-wheeler.

Helton, who admitted to being under the influence of methamphetamine at the time, claimed he acted out of fear and paranoia. His trial is scheduled for January 13, 2025, in Lawrence County Superior Court II.

Community mourns loss of local journalist

The local community was saddened by the passing of Bill Raines, 49, on May 24th. Raines, the editor and owner of the Lawrence County Zephyr, succumbed to cancer after a long battle. Known for his dedication to local news coverage and community service, Raines had a significant impact on Lawrence County.

His career included time as a reporter for WBIW 1340 AM before he founded the Lawrence County Zephyr in 2021. Raines was also active in various community roles, including volunteer firefighting and serving as an advanced EMT. His contributions to the community were recognized with several awards throughout his lifetime.

Tragic accident lands woman behind bars on alcohol charges

In a follow-up to a tragic accident from February 2023, Kasey L. Caraway, 50, of Bedford, was re-arrested for violating the terms of her pretrial release. Caraway faces serious charges, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated, resulting in death, stemming from a fatal accident that claimed the life of 65-year-old Michael Wright.

The incident, which occurred at the intersection of State Road 37 and John Williams Boulevard, involved three vehicles. Toxicology reports revealed the presence of multiple controlled substances in Caraway’s system at the time of the accident.

These events serve as stark reminders of the ongoing challenges faced by the community, from crime and substance abuse to the loss of valued community members. However, they also highlight the resilience and dedication of local law enforcement, journalists, and community servants who continue to work towards a safer and more informed county.
