BLOOMINGTON – The Indiana State Police Bloomington District is preparing for a severe weather system approaching the area this coming Sunday, January 5th, and Monday, January 6th.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), snow with a possible mix of freezing rain will be likely before 1 p.m. on Sunday. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent. NOAA predicts snow with freezing rain Sunday evening with 10 mph winds from the east/northeast. Wind gusts could reach up to 22 mph with a chance of precipitation at 90 percent.
NOAA also predicts a 40 percent chance of snow before 1 p.m. on Monday, January 6,th with winds around 10 mph and gusts possibly reaching up to 21 mph.
Troopers from the Bloomington District will patrol I-69 and major roadways on Sunday and Monday. Any abandoned or parked vehicles that could impede INDOT’s snow/ice removal will be removed before the arrival of the inclement weather. The Bloomington District requests that any motorist with an abandoned or parked vehicle along the road please have it removed before Sunday, or ISP will remove it. The Bloomington District will continue to monitor weather conditions and adjust coverage accordingly.
The Bloomington District also requests Hoosiers remain at home unless necessary. If motorists must be out, the Indiana State Police reminds motorists of the following:
- Approach bridges and overpasses with extreme caution, as they typically freeze first.
- Allow for increased stopping distances, especially when approaching traffic control devices such as lights and stop signs.
- Maintain a full tank of fuel or full EV charge.
- Maintain a complete cell phone charge. Keep a charge cord in your vehicle.
- Keep your vehicle stocked with appropriate winter emergency gear/clothing.
- Monitor local news and weather outlets for updates.
Freezing rain can lead to fallen trees and branches, resulting in power outages and blocked roadways. The Indiana State Police reminds all Hoosiers to exercise extreme caution during inclement winter weather.
