November 2024: A Month in Review

LAWRENCE CO. – As 2024 nears its end, November brought a mix of stories from the Lawrence County community – the bittersweet conclusion of a beloved animal rescue campaign, a complex investigation into a shooting incident, and a milestone celebration for a local small business.

“Rescue Robin” Retires

The White River Humane Society bid farewell to its longtime supporter “Rescue Robin” this year, as board member Robin Compton announced his retirement after nine years of locking himself in a cage with his huskies to raise funds for neglected animals. Compton’s dedication over the years raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the shelter, but health concerns have led him to step down from the annual campaign in 2024, which brought in $50,000 for the WRHS.

Woman arrested on attempted murder charges

On November 4th, 44-year-old Tommie K. Jones of Indianapolis was shot multiple times in what authorities describe as a complex case involving allegations of assault and attempted murder.

Nina Devillez

Jones reported meeting 31-year-old Nina A. Devillez, also of Indianapolis, who allegedly lured him to a secluded location, drew a handgun, and opened fire. Devillez claimed self-defense, stating Jones had assaulted her the previous night. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to unravel the conflicting accounts.

Local business celebrates 40 years of service

Bailey’s Flowers and Gifts marked 40 years of serving the area, inviting residents to join in a two-day anniversary celebration on November 8th and 9th.

The family-owned flower shop has been a fixture in downtown Bedford since 1978, providing high-quality floral arrangements and personalized service to generations of customers over the past four decades.

As November drew to a close, Lawrence County reflected on this mix of heartwarming and troubling events – bidding farewell to a beloved charitable campaign, grappling with a troubling act of violence, and honoring the enduring success of a small local business.
