Lawrence County Highway Department prepares for winter storms to ensure road safety

LAWRENCE CO – As winter storms hit Lawrence County, the local highway department is working around the clock to keep roads safe for the community. Lawrence County Highway Superintendent Brian Sowder highlighted the department’s ongoing efforts to prepare for snow removal, ensuring roads are cleared and passable during inclement weather.

“We are in the middle of winter operations, and our team is constantly preparing for snow removal to keep the community we live in as safe as possible,” said Sowder. “Our department is equipped with 15 trucks, all fitted with snow plows and salt/sand distributors, and we rely on a dedicated force of 28 county drivers, mechanics, and operators to cover approximately 700 miles of county roads and 128 bridges.”

The highway department’s operations are all hands-on deck during snow removal, with personnel loading trucks, clearing roads, and maintaining equipment to ensure continuous service. “During heavy snow, it takes one truck approximately 10 hours to clear a designated route,” Sowder explained. “We know the community wants the roads cleared quickly, and we work tirelessly to accomplish that.”

While most residents can stay home during snowstorms, the Lawrence County Highway Department’s team is out on the roads, working to make them safe for travel. “As Superintendent, I want to express my gratitude to the employees of the Highway Department and their families who support them during long nights, missed holidays, weekends, and special occasions,” Sowder added. “Their dedication is truly appreciated, and I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year.”

Currently, the department is pretreating roads in anticipation of an upcoming storm, and salt and sand piles have been distributed throughout the county on all hillsides for emergency situations. The team is closely monitoring conditions and will implement snow removal efforts as needed to ensure the safety of all drivers.

The Lawrence County Highway Department’s tireless efforts demonstrate their commitment to keeping the community safe during the harsh winter months.
