NEW ALBANY – An intense police standoff is currently unfolding in New Albany, with law enforcement surrounding a residence in the 1000 block of East Market Street. Authorities suspect the situation may involve 33-year-old Austin Schepers, who is alleged to have shot an Orange County sheriff’s deputy early Friday morning.
The incident began around 12:30 a.m. when Orange County Deputy Zach Andry observed a car parked on Highway 150 and Indiana State Road 56 near West Baden. Deputy Andry suspected criminal activity and initiated a traffic stop, asking Schepers to step out of the vehicle. It was during this interaction that police say Schepers opened fire on the deputy before fleeing the scene.
Deputy Andry was immediately transported to the University of Louisville Hospital, but his condition was not publicly disclosed. Meanwhile, law enforcement quickly ramped up efforts to locate the suspect. Hours later, Schepers’ vehicle was found abandoned in the Orangeville area, prompting the ongoing standoff in New Albany.
Indiana State Police have been on the scene since around 6:00 p.m., using loudspeakers to call Schepers to exit the home with his hands up. As the situation develops, authorities urge the public to avoid the area for safety reasons. Flash bombs were used at one point.
In the wake of this violent incident, an account has been set up to benefit the family of Deputy Andry. Community members wishing to support the deputy’s family can make donations through several methods. An account has been created at Springs Valley Bank and Trust in French Lick under the name “Deputy Zach Andry and Family.” Donations can be made by visiting any Springs Valley Bank and Trust branch or calling 800-843-4947. Contributions can be made through the Indiana Fallen Heroes Foundation or via PayPal.
As the standoff continues, law enforcement agencies urge the public to stay vigilant and report any relevant information to authorities.
