Winter Storm Watch issued for Central and Southern Indiana

LAWERNCE CO. – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for much of central and southern Indiana from Sunday morning through Monday evening, as heavy wintry precipitation is expected to impact the region. The watch covers portions of central, east-central, north-central, south-central, southeast, southwest, and west-central Indiana.

Key Details:

  • What: Heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain are likely to accumulate, with snow amounts potentially reaching six inches or more. Significant accumulations of sleet and freezing rain are possible, particularly in the southern areas of central Indiana. In addition to the hazardous conditions, wind gusts of up to 35 mph are expected.
  • When: The storm will begin Sunday morning and last through Monday evening.
  • Impacts: Roadways, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Strong winds combined with heavy snow may cause tree limbs to break, leading to the potential for power outages. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, as road conditions may deteriorate quickly.

Precautionary/Preparedness Actions:

  • Monitor weather updates regularly for the latest forecast and storm developments.
  • If travel is necessary, consider delaying trips and use extreme caution.
  • It’s recommended that drivers carry a winter storm kit in their vehicles, including essentials like tire chains, booster cables, flashlights, shovels, blankets, extra clothing, water, a first aid kit, and any other supplies that could be useful if stranded.

Stay informed and prepared as winter weather affects the region this weekend. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and local authorities will continue providing updates and advisories throughout the storm.
