BEDFORD- Jim Craig will present “The Railroad Photography of Charles Herley 1948-1950” on Monday, January 13th at 7 p.m. in the Lawrence County Museum meeting room.
Charles Herley grew up in Bedford and photographed the trains around Bedford, concentrating on the 1948 to 1950 time period. This was an exciting time for the Monon Railroad and the communities it served. John Barriger assumed the presidency in 1946 and was very involved in public relations. New black and gold freight diesels appeared on the freights and the freight trains ran on time again. The forces in Lafayette shops had just completed work on the new Red and Gray passenger trains that passed through town, with names such as the Thoroughbred, the Bluegrass, and the Red Devil. Mr. Herley also captured the “older” steam engines that were left and some rolling stock, and photographed the Milwaukee Road in Bedford.
The speaker program will follow the January meeting of the Lawrence County Historical and Genealogical Society, which is at 6:30 p.m. Both the meeting and the program are free and open to the public.
