Information released in fatality of suspect follows officer shooting in Orange County

LOUISVILLE, KY – A suspect who allegedly shot an Orange County deputy multiple times was killed in a shootout with law enforcement in Louisville Saturday evening, officials say.

Austin Schepers

Louisville Metro Police Chief Paul Humphrey reported that Louisville Metro Police Department officers and U.S. Marshals located the suspect, Schepers, in the backyard of a residence on the 3700 block of Wheeler Avenue around 7:30 p.m. When confronted, Schepers opened fire on officers, who returned fire, resulting in his death.

Orange County Deputy Zach Andry

The incident followed Friday morning’s shooting of Orange County Deputy Zach Andry, who was critically wounded while investigating what appeared to be a disabled vehicle near the intersection of US 150 and Indiana State Road 56. According to Orange County Sheriff David Henderson, Deputy Andry approached the silver 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix and requested its occupants to exit. Schepers allegedly then shot the deputy four times, striking him in the head, neck, shoulder, and protective vest.

“Deputy Andry was never able to unholster his weapon. He was ambushed,” Sheriff Henderson stated.

The female occupant in the vehicle was later taken into custody, though authorities have not announced whether she faces charges.

Sheriff Henderson indicated that bodycam footage from the shooting will be released within the next 10 days.

Deputy Andry was transported to UofL Health in downtown Louisville, where he remains in “critical but stable” condition.

Indiana State Police established a fund to support Andry and his family during his recovery. Those wishing to donate can go to Springs Valley Bank and Trust at 8482 State Road 56 or call 1-800-843-4947. Donation options are also available here.
