JENNINGS CO.— The Jennings County Sheriff’s Department is mourning the loss of K9 Axel, who died on Saturday following a medical emergency. Axel, an eight-year-old Dutch Shepherd, and Belgian Malinois served the department for seven years alongside his handler, Chief Deputy Cody Low.
Axel was a highly decorated police dog, earning the prestigious Medal of Valor Award from the North American Police Work Dog Association. He also received a life-saving award for an incident in which he heroically saved the life of his handler. Axel was instrumental in making countless arrests, apprehending criminals, and recovering narcotics throughout his career.
The loss of Axel is being deeply felt within the department and the community. “Axel was more than just a working dog; he was a dedicated partner and a trusted member of our team,” said the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department. “His contributions to law enforcement and his unwavering commitment to duty will not be forgotten.”
The department plans to hold a memorial event for Axel later this week, though the event is currently on hold due to the ongoing snow emergency. Details will be announced once the weather conditions have cleared.
Axel’s passing marks the end of an era for the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department K9 unit, but his legacy of service and bravery will live on.
