‘The Soul Kitchen’ celebrates 10 years on WFIU this month with dance party on January 17

BLOOMINGTON – The Soul Kitchen, WFIU Public Radio’s Friday afternoon and Saturday evening jazz program, will mark its 10th anniversary on the air this month.

The Soul Kitchen originally premiered on WFIU on January 9, 2015. Host William Morris wanted to create “an upbeat end-of-the-week show built on funky jazz, cool R&B, and a pinch here and there of other toe-tapping music from other genres.” Ten years later, the program is a favorite of many WFIU listeners.

To celebrate a decade of The Soul Kitchen, WFIU is hosting a 10th-anniversary dance party on Friday, January 17, from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at Harmony School in Bloomington (909 E. 2nd St.). William Morris will deejay this all-ages event, featuring a mix of sweet soul, funky grooves, and plenty of rhythm. Guests can participate in a dance class taught by Dr. Charles Sykes, retired executive director and current historian for the African American Arts Institute at Indiana University. Light refreshments will be provided.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is requested. RSVP at bit.ly/soulkitchen10.

The Soul Kitchen dance party is the first event in commemorations to mark WFIU’s 75th anniversary this year. Learn more about WFIU’s history on its 75th anniversary website, wfiu.org/75.
