Bloomington officer injured after suspect rams police car in early morning pursuit

BLOOMINGTON – A Bloomington police officer was injured early Monday morning when a suspect allegedly rammed his patrol car head-on following reports of gunfire outside an apartment complex.

Officer Chad Dorman, 37, was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital with injuries to his wrist, head, and chest after the collision. He was treated and later released. The patrol vehicle sustained significant front-end damage in the incident.

William W. Garrett Jr., 32, is facing multiple charges. According to police reports, Garrett was initially suspected of firing a gun outside an apartment before fleeing the scene in a Jeep. When city and county officers located the vehicle on Thornton Drive, Garrett allegedly accelerated directly toward Officer Dorman’s patrol car, resulting in the collision.

Garrett has been charged with three felonies: battery with bodily injury to a public safety officer, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. Additional misdemeanor charges include driving while intoxicated, endangering a person, resisting law enforcement, and unlawful carrying of a handgun.

Following the incident, Garrett was taken to Monroe Hospital for evaluation and mandatory blood alcohol testing before being booked into the Monroe County Jail. His bond has been set at $15,000.

The incident remains under investigation by the Bloomington Police Department.
