WASHINGTON– A fire destroyed a historic building in downtown Washington on Thursday, January 9, when flames consumed the former Antique Bar, a local landmark. The fire, which broke out in the afternoon, required the coordinated efforts of multiple fire departments and agencies to bring the blaze under control.
The fire was reported at approximately 3:27 p.m. at 110 East Main Street, located at the intersection of Main and 1st Streets. Crews from Washington City Fire Department, Vincennes Fire Department, and surrounding agencies, including Engine 9 and Rescue 9 from nearby departments, responded swiftly to combat the flames. The high winds, snow, and sleet made firefighting operations extremely difficult despite their efforts.
Heavy smoke was visible as firefighters worked to contain the blaze, deploying ladder trucks and additional manpower. The severity of the fire led to a roof collapse, further complicating the efforts to control the flames. A low water supply also hindered the response, prompting the assistance of the local water and street departments to ensure an adequate water flow.
Apartments were located on the top floor.
The building was a total loss. No injuries were reported, and the Red Cross provided food and supplies for the first responders working at the scene.
Authorities and the state fire marshal are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
One building damaged by the fire has been torn down, while another connected to it is being evaluated for safety.
A damage estimate is not yet available.
On Sunday, January 5, Engine 9 and Rescue 9 responded, alongside Washington City Fire Department firefighters, to a fully involved residential fire, where the challenging weather conditions also hindered their efforts.
The investigation into both incidents is ongoing, with officials working to determine the exact cause of each blaze.
