Harmony School celebrates 50 years of educational innovation and community impact

BLOOMINGTON – Harmony School, a beacon of progressive democratic education in Bloomington, Indiana, is thrilled to announce its 50th anniversary. Since opening its doors in 1974, Harmony has been dedicated to fostering holistic education that values creativity, individuality, and community involvement. Over the past five decades, the school has empowered students to explore their interests, develop critical thinking skills, and embrace diversity, becoming a unique educational hub that serves students from early childhood through high school.

The school is renowned for its mission to “prepare young people to live in and contribute to a heterogeneous democratic society” by encouraging students to shape their education actively. With a curriculum designed around freedom and responsibility, Harmony allows students to pursue their passions, providing a platform for independent inquiry and project-based learning.

Harmony School Executive Director Steve Bonchek

“Our 50th anniversary is a celebration not just of Harmony’s history, but of the values we champion—creativity, diversity, and collaboration,” said Harmony School Executive Director Steve Bonchek. “We are proud of the inclusive community we’ve built, where every student’s voice is heard and respected.”

Over the years, Harmony has gained a reputation for its commitment to creating community, nurturing the whole child, and student-driven initiatives. With hands-on learning experiences, such as field trips and community engagement, students are encouraged to think critically and creatively. The school has also significantly welcomed international students and fostered global perspectives within its vibrant, close-knit environment.

As part of its 50th-year celebrations, Harmony School will share history from the past 50 years and alumni stories, host a spring open house, and organize an alumni weekend. These events will reflect on the school’s legacy and look forward to future innovations in education. The celebrations aim to honor the contributions of students, parents, faculty, and alumni who have been part of this incredible journey.

“Non-conventional indicators such as the joy, noise, creativity, and enthusiasm on display daily in the Harmony community keep me going after 50 years of doing this,” said Bonchek. “Seeing young people and adults participating as members of a 220-person interdependent community gives one hope that schools can really be both different and successful at the same time.”
