Man struck and seriously injured in toll road crash

ELKHART CO. – Last evening, January 10, Indiana State Troopers responded to a crash on the Indiana Toll Road where a man was struck while he was outside his vehicle that had spun out and crashed.

Preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 7:00 p.m., a black Ford SUV was traveling eastbound on the Indiana Toll Road when it spun out and crashed near the 94-mile marker.  This is approximately two miles east of the Elkhart Exit.  The Ford allegedly came to rest facing south, blocking the eastbound lanes, when the driver, a 19-year-old man from Frankfort, IL, got out of the SUV.  While standing on the driver’s side of the SUV it was struck in the passenger side by a white 2019 Volvo semi.  This collision caused the SUV to collide with the driver standing outside, throwing him to the ditch on the south side of the road.

The driver of the Ford SUV was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with serious injuries.  The driver of the Volvo, a 64-year-old man from Philadelphia, PA, was not injured.

Eastbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road reopened at approximately 8:20 p.m. after the crash investigation, and vehicles were removed.  Roads were slick during the crash due to the falling snow.
