Liz Feitl elected Monroe County Councilor after competitive caucus

BLOOMINGTON — Liz Feitl has been elected as the new at-large Monroe County Councilor, filling the vacancy left by the late Cheryl Munson, who passed away in December 2024. Feitl emerged victorious after a competitive caucus involving seven other candidates and 59 voters.

The caucus, held to select a replacement for Munson, saw candidates present their cases on key issues such as the new Monroe County Jail project, homelessness, and housing affordability. Among the candidates, Scott Shackleford, a Stanford Law graduate, raised concerns about cybersecurity threats, while Rob Council focused on affordable housing initiatives.

After an initial round of voting, four candidates were eliminated. Feitl, who led with 25 votes, advanced to the second round, where Shackleford was eliminated. Feitl secured 30 votes in the final ballfot, defeating Ilana Stonebreaker and Matt Caldie, who received 22 and 7 votes, respectively.

Stonebreaker, who campaigned on her experience with local government, expressed plans to remain active in community outreach but reflected on the loss, acknowledging Feitl’s potential to strengthen the council with her expertise.

Feitl was sworn in shortly after the election.
