Martin County to host first meeting for Dementia Friendly Community Efforts

MARTIN CO. – Residents of Martin County are invited to join the inaugural meeting of the Dementia Friendly Martin County Action Team on Tuesday, January 28, at 11:30 a.m. The meeting, hosted by IU Health’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Resource Service, will occur at a location to be announced, and lunch will be provided.

This community-driven initiative aims to foster an environment of support for individuals with dementia and their caregivers. With reports from the Alzheimer’s Association indicating that one in nine individuals over the age of 65 are living with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias, the need for these efforts is critical. It’s estimated that the disease may impact hundreds of Martin County residents.

At the meeting, participants will begin discussing how the community can better support those with dementia. The initiative will also focus on training local businesses, organizations, community leaders, and caregivers to interact effectively with people living with dementia, ensuring they have the tools and resources they need for success.

Diana Matthews, the point of contact for the event, encourages everyone to be part of the movement. “Creating a Dementia Friendly Community takes a collective effort. We all have a role to play,” she said.

Residents interested in attending are asked to RSVP by contacting Diana Matthews at dmatthews4@iuhealth.org or call 812-276-4270.

Join the conversation and help make Martin County a more supportive and inclusive place for people affected by dementia.
