INDIANA – The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology has officially kicked off its annual photo contest, with entries accepted until Friday, April 4, 2025. The competition, which has been held since 2005, invites photographers of all ages and skill levels to capture the beauty of Indiana’s historic landmarks and structures.
The contest is designed to raise awareness of the state’s rich history and promote preserving its architectural heritage. All entries must feature structures at least 50 years old and within Indiana to qualify. While the buildings need not be fully restored, photographs of natural elements, such as landscapes or wildlife, will not be accepted.

Participants can enter their photos in one of five categories: Color, Black & White, Altered, Kids (under 18), and Faces of Architecture. The “Faces of Architecture” category is this year’s theme in honor of Historic Preservation Month. This category invites photographers to submit images of buildings featuring carvings of faces—human, animal, or mythical creatures—such as gargoyles or grotesques.

Each participant can submit up to three images, with one photo and one entry form per email. The photos must have been taken within the past two years, and files should be in JPEG format with a maximum size of 10MB. All submissions should be emailed to DHPAConnect@dnr.IN.gov.
For complete contest rules guidelines and to download the entry form, visit on.IN.gov/preservation-month.
As part of National Historic Preservation Month in May, the DNR will showcase selected contest photos and announce the winners on its Instagram account (@indianadnr). Celebrating Indiana’s historic resources and the talented photographers who capture them is an excellent opportunity.
Get out your cameras and start snapping—entries are due by April 4.
