SELLERSBURG – Silver Creek wasted no time in making up for a few years of frustration.
The Dragons scratched a seven-year itch. As Bedford North Lawrence clanked like an engine without oil, Silver Creek was smooth, slick and sensational while finally conquering a role-model opponent that’s still finding out how the others lived the last decade.
Silver Creek, arguably the most powerful on BNL’s schedule, showed all its powers while blasting the Stars for the first time in program history on Tuesday night. Ranked No.3 in Class 3A, the Dragons spewed fire while BNL coughed on the ashes during a 52-21, mercy-rule triumph.
Brooklynn Renn, a 6-2 future Junior All-Star who played limited minutes because her dominant presence was not necessary, recorded a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds as Silver Creek (19-2 with 12 straight wins) topped BNL for the first time after going 0-7 in the previous battles. Some of those were epic struggles. This was not.
Silver Creek, celebrating its Senior Night, blasted to an 18-0 lead, coasted to a 42-13 advantage at the half, then triggered the running clock on a Renn basket for a 49-13 lead with 5:40 left in the third quarter. BNL (6-15) has been overwhelmed a few times this season, but that was the best of the best.
“It felt like it at times,” BNL coach Greg Burton said. All the evidence was collected during the first five minutes.
Silver Creek buried four treys, and Renn grabbed almost every rebound, during the 18-0 run. That finally ended when Katie Godlevske came off the bench to connect from long range at the 2:55 mark. The Dragons never really cooled, converting 17 of 26 shots during the first half.
“I didn’t expect to play that well, I didn’t expect to shoot the ball like that,” Silver Creek coach Scott Schoen said. “We played really well. That’s the most I’ve seen the ball move. You could tell the kids were playing for each other, they were sharing it, and we were hitting open shots.”
On the flip side, BNL was a brutal 7 of 38 from the field.
“We were frustrated early because shots weren’t falling,” Burton said. “We were executing and getting shots we wanted. But we missed a ton of layups, a ton of jump shots.”
Amira Estephan, one of four honored Silver Creek seniors, hit four treys and scored 12 points, while Emma Schoen came off the bench for three treys. Silver Creek was scoreless in the fourth quarter, thanks to the running clock and the utilization of the entire Creek bench before the seniors came back for an encore to kill the final minute.

Renn was the reason the Dragons were so successful from distance. She attracted so much attention in the paint.
“When they double-team her, one thing that’s so overlooked is she could be a very selfish player,” Schoen said. “But she’s not. She will kick that ball because she trusts her teammates, she trusts that she has good shooters and capable players around her. They have to pick their poison, I understand that. We’re so blessed, we have a great team. You have to choose your medicine.”
“We didn’t do a whole lot to slow it down, but you have to be in help, and they were able to find the kids we were helping off,” Burton said. “And they all hit them.”
BNL did not have anyone come close to double figures. Miley Sherrill and Tori Nikirk had 5 points each.
“When we first started scheduling Bedford, and I want to give Bedford props, we wanted to get our program to that,” Schoen said. “They still have it. These kids are having to figure things out. We went through that. I have so much respect for them. They’re a blue blood.”
BNL will conclude the regular season with a trip to Class A No.2 Borden on Saturday.
