INDIANA – According to the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) rankings, Indiana students have made significant strides in reading proficiency. The state now ranks sixth in the nation for both fourth and eighth-grade reading, a remarkable improvement from 19th and 17th place, respectively, in 2022.
This marks the highest ranking Indiana has ever achieved in fourth-grade reading on the NAEP.

Indiana students also demonstrated strong performance in mathematics. Fourth graders ranked ninth in the nation, up from 11th in 2022. However, eighth-grade math scores slightly declined, falling from 11th to 13th place.
Despite these positive trends, the NAEP results indicate that student performance across the nation has not yet fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels in reading and mathematics.
The NAEP, often called “the Nation’s Report Card,” comprehensively assesses student achievement in key subjects across the United States.
