See Cranes at Muscatatuck Refuge this weekend

SEYMOUR – Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts are invited to celebrate the annual Celebration of Cranes event at the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge on February 1st, starting at 9:00 a.m.

The event highlights the migration of sandhill cranes, which typically number in the thousands at the Refuge during February. However, due to heavy snowfall this month, many cranes have moved to other areas. Warmer temperatures expected next week are likely to bring them back.

Despite the lower crane numbers this year, the Celebration of Cranes offers various activities for visitors:

  • Guided Crane Viewing Tours: Two guided caravan tours will be conducted from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., taking participants to crane viewing areas outside the Refuge. No registration is required for these tours departing from the Refuge’s visitor center.
  • Self-Guided Tours: Visitors who prefer to explore at their own pace can access self-guided tour information at the visitor center.
  • Crane Interpretive Program: A special program delving into the fascinating world of cranes will be held at the visitor center at noon.
  • Crane Craft Activity for Children: Keep the little ones engaged with a fun crane-themed craft activity.

The Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge is located at 12985 US 50 East in Seymour. For more information about the Celebration of Cranes event, contact the Refuge visitor center at 812-523-9972.
