Indiana residents encouraged to show support for veterans with green porch lights

INDIANA – Many Indiana homeowners use outdoor lighting to enhance their homes’ curb appeal, often switching porch light colors for various observances. However, a growing movement encourages residents to permanently adopt green porch lights to show year-round support for U.S. military veterans.

Colored porch lights are often used to raise awareness for various causes – red celebrates the dedicated service of firefighters and American Heart Month, and pink for breast cancer awareness. Blue porch lights symbolize support for law enforcement who have lost their lives in the line of duty and raise awareness for autism. Purple lights honor the survivors and victims of domestic violence.

The “Greenlight A Vet” campaign, initiated by Walmart, has gained significant traction. This initiative aims to recognize veterans as valued members of their communities and to foster a national conversation about their contributions.

There are several reasons the color green was chosen to represent U.S. veterans. Green is the color of hope, renewal, and well-being. According to the Greenlight a Veteran campaign, “greenlight” commonly refers to activating forward movement. This illustrates their desire to spread awareness and appreciation for our veterans.

Another reason for the color choice might’ve been the U.S. Military’s uniforms. The classic green-camo pattern is instantly recognizable and commonly associated with our troops.

The campaign encourages homeowners to switch their porch lights to green as a simple yet powerful way to express gratitude to veterans for their service and sacrifice. Green lights are a constant reminder of the appreciation and respect veterans deserve during specific awareness months and throughout the year. Indiana residents are encouraged to join this nationwide effort and show their support for those who have served the nation.
