BLOOMINGTON – Indiana University men’s basketball head coach Mike Woodson will step down at the end of the 2024-25 season, athletic director Scott Dolson announced Friday.

Woodson, 66, informed Dolson of his decision during a meeting on Wednesday, citing it as an “emotional and difficult decision” that had been weighing on him. The former Indiana basketball star is in his fourth season leading his alma mater, holding a 77-49 overall record and a 36-36 mark in Big Ten play.
Under Woodson’s leadership, the Hoosiers returned to the NCAA Tournament in his first two seasons, ending a five-year drought. However, the team missed the tournament in 2023-24 and is struggling with a 14-9 record (5-7 in Big Ten play), sitting outside most tournament projections amid a four-game losing streak.
Before returning to Bloomington in 2021, Woodson had spent his entire coaching career in the NBA, including head coaching stints with the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks. A former two-time All-American under Bob Knight, Woodson’s tenure has helped bridge Indiana’s storied past with its present, particularly in navigating modern college athletics challenges like NIL and the transfer portal.
The Hoosiers have eight regular-season games remaining, starting with a home matchup against No. 24 Michigan on Saturday.
