North Vernon man arrested after fatally shooting his father

JENNINGS CO. – A 30-year-old North Vernon man was arrested last night following a joint investigation by the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police into the death of his 53-year-old father.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m. on February 9, 2025, law enforcement responded to a residence in the 4000 block of East Private Road 450 South in southern Jennings County after receiving reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of Robert ‘Matthew’ Montgomery, 53, outside the residence. He had been shot. Officers apprehended the alleged suspect, Conner M. Montgomery, 30, at the scene.

The preliminary investigation suggests that Conner Montgomery was at the residence with an adult female and two children when an altercation ensued. During the altercation, he allegedly pointed a gun at the female and fired a shot inside the home. As the female attempted to leave, Conner Montgomery allegedly shot her vehicle, disabling it. Robert Montgomery was then called to the scene before law enforcement was notified. Upon his arrival, Conner Montgomery reportedly shot his father while he was standing outside the residence.

Conner Montgomery was arrested on initial charges of murder, criminal confinement with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, domestic battery (in the presence of minors), neglect of a dependent, and pointing a firearm.

He is currently held in the Jennings County Jail pending his initial court appearance in the Jennings County Circuit Court.

Detectives Ian McPherson of the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office and Vincent Scott of the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post are leading the investigation, with assistance from the North Vernon Police Department, the Jennings County Coroner’s Office, and the Jennings County Prosecutor’s Office.
