Lawrence County officials report updates on infrastructure and jail operations

LAWRENCE CO.- During Tuesday’s Lawrence County commissioners meeting, several key updates were presented, covering environmental monitoring, infrastructure planning, and jail operations.

Highway Director Brian Sowder announced the continuation of environmental oversight at the former Lawrence County landfill, which sits adjacent to the Lawrence County Government complex. AECOM Technical Services Inc. has been hired to conduct groundwater monitoring, statistical data analysis, and reporting – services they have provided since 2008. This ongoing work fulfills Indiana Department of Environmental Management requirements for post-closure care of the facility.

Sowder also opened the bidding process for the county’s 2025 bridge inspections, signaling early preparation for infrastructure maintenance.

In other department reports, Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer reported that updated county highway maps are currently at the printers and will be available for distribution soon. Luchauer and her staff are also working to modernize operations by updating the county inventory list on their new computer system.

Sheriff Greg Day provided the latest jail population statistics, reporting 81 current inmates. The population breakdown includes 70 males and 11 females. Among these inmates are six Department of Correction holds, five parole holds, and four Level 6 felons.

The commissioners also reappointed Dr. George Sorrells and John Sherrill to the Lawrence County Health Department Board of Health.

These updates reflect ongoing efforts to maintain environmental compliance, update infrastructure planning, and manage county facilities effectively.
