Eight horses rescued from neglect in Martin County

MARTIN CO. – An investigation into alleged animal neglect that began on January 15, 2025, has resulted in the rescue of eight horses and the arrest of three individuals.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office, along with veterinarian Eric Renshaw of the Indiana Board of Animal Health, conducted a welfare check at the Shoals residence of Rochelle Peterson.

Deputies found the horses confined to a small pasture with insufficient access to food and water. Frozen mud and manure prevented the animals from reaching the limited resources available.

The horses were observed to be emaciated, with many showing leg injuries likely caused by navigating the deep, frozen mud.

One horse was found to be non-weight-bearing due to a dislocated pelvis and was euthanized at the scene. The horses were also seen eating manure, a sign of malnourishment.

Dr. Renshaw assessed each horse and determined that all eight were in poor condition and required immediate intervention.

The investigation revealed that Dakota Rice and Mykaela Rice shared responsibility for the care of the horses. Peterson, Dakota Rice, and Mykaela Rice are facing charges of animal cruelty.

With the recommendation of Dr. Renshaw and Martin County Deputies, all three individuals voluntarily surrendered the horses to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

The rescued horses are recovering at Sugar’s Ridge Ranch. The is a nonprofit organization run by Donnie Simmerman of Shoals. To donate to the care of these horses and see their progress, visit the Sugar’s Ridge Ranch on their Facebook page.
